Going on a yoga retreat alone as a woman: what it is really like

Yes, you can go on a yoga retreat on your own, and many women do. On a small women's retreat you are not alone for long: we collect you from the airport, you meet the group at the welcome dinner, and by the second morning on the mat you know everyone's name. Here is what the week really looks like when you come alone, and how I would choose a retreat if I were in your place.

Why so many women come alone

Friends are busy, partners do not always do yoga, and sometimes you simply need a week that belongs only to you. Coming alone also means you decide what you need each day: company or quiet.

"I came in the search of solitude, to get some distance. On the spot I met beautiful souls and straight ahead I wanted nothing else, but their company." Ada, Fuerteventura

It always moves me. First I talk on the phone with a woman who is interested in the retreat but not sure whether to come. She says it is "not her style", that she never travels alone. And then I watch her settle in and have a wonderful time with the women she has just met, because they came on their own too, just as nervous about how it would turn out :) And quite often they come back to me later, together, for another retreat!

The first day

Will I fit in?

My retreats are for women of every level, including complete beginners. Most Amigas are between 25 and 65. The groups are small, so I see each woman and adapt the practice to her body and her day.

"I hadn't practiced yoga in years, I had only attended a few classes, but despite that I was feeling great in Zuza's classes. She has a very individual approach to each participant." Katerina

How much time do we spend together?

Less than you think. Nothing is compulsory. There is yoga in the morning and in the evening, and on some days a group trip. The rest of the time is yours: the beach, a book, a nap, a coffee with new friends or a long walk alone. You choose.

A shared room or your own room?

Both work well.

How I would choose a retreat if I were going alone

Before you book anything, with me or with someone else, check these things:

  1. Group size. A small group (up to about 15 people) means nobody gets lost.
  2. Who leads it. Read about the teacher, watch her videos, and write to her. Do you get a real answer from a real person?
  3. Airport pick-up. When you travel alone, being collected makes the first day much easier.
  4. What is included. Meals, trips, transfers and yoga equipment. Know what you will pay for on the spot.
  5. Room options. Is there a shared option and a private option?
  6. Language. Can you ask questions and understand the teacher easily?
  7. Terms and insurance. Read the booking and cancellation terms before you pay, and buy travel insurance.
  8. Reviews from real women. Look for names and details, not only stars.

Feeling nervous? That is normal

It is normal to feel a little nervous before your first retreat alone. A small group and a host who knows you by name make the first evening much easier. I travel alone too, on long trips to faraway places. Now it feels normal to me, wonderful and full of freedom. But I remember very well how nervous I was before my first solo trip (I was flying to India). And you know what? Every time, those trips gave me so much, and I met such great people, that now I know it is worth it. I only want more :)

If you have questions, write to me. I answer every message myself.

Frequently asked questions

I have never done yoga. Is a retreat for me? Yes. I adapt the classes to each level, and beginners are very welcome.

What if I want to be alone on some days? That is completely fine. You can skip a trip or a class and spend the day your way.

Is it safe to travel alone to a retreat? On my retreats we collect you from the airport, you stay with a small group, and I am with you on site all week.
